Each parashah (portion) is further divided into eight subsections (1st-rishon, 2nd-sheni, 3rd-shlishi, 4th-r’vi’i, 5th-chamishi, 6th-shishi, 7th-shvi’i, plus the conclusion-maftir). Maimonides (Rambam) is the earliest source for the present arrangement [Yad haChazakah], but hints can be seen in Midrash Safra and Sifri, going back to the third century. In fact, the tradition of reading the Torah every Sabbath according to some order is evident in Tenach itself
